We recommend using heat-resistant polyimide tape while millmaxing a PCB. We offer it here in a 0.5" wide (12.7mm wide) spool that is perfectly suited for millmaxing.

After dropping a row of millmax sockets into your PCB, apply a strip of polyimide tape across the row on top of the sockets to hold them in place. Flip the PCB over and solder the millmax sockets in place, then peel off the polyimide tape off before installing your switches.

We recommend using this tape with 3305 Mill-max sockets.

The 0.5" width is perfect for covering a row of millmax pins without any overhang mess. It sticks firmly while I solder but peels off cleanly afterward, and the heat resistance held up through several passes.

The 0.5" width fits perfectly between those millmax pins without any overlap, and it peels off clean with zero sticky residue left behind. I used it to mask off two full rows and the heat resistance held up exactly as promised.

Finally, a spool that doesn't fight you halfway through a row of millmax pins—the 0.5" width lays flat and stays put under the iron. I've used cheaper amber tapes that bubbled up, but this one held its edge through the whole board.
