Building the Sonnet with a solder PCB will require additional tools (a soldering iron) to install switches. However, it enables additional layouts.

The hotswap PCB (ANSI only) doesn't require any additional tools and allows you to change switches on the fly. However, you will only be able to use certain layouts and a full plate.

Both hotswap and solder PCBs are wired-only.

The solder PCB opened up way more layout options than I expected, and my soldering iron got plenty of use this weekend. Once the switches are in, the board feels rock solid, and I love that I wasn’t locked into ANSI only.

The extra layouts on the solder PCB are a big win for me — I swapped in a 7u spacebar and arrow cluster without any trouble, though my soldering iron got a solid workout. If you're not into soldering, the hotswap being ANSI-only is a fair tradeoff for the convenience.
